TransBay Terminal Lithograph Series

“An Alter of Change” is my current series of paintings and lithographs capturing the seven year construction of the new Transbay Terminal, this is a project that will have a major impact on the urban landscape and life in San Francisco, California. I first became aware of the project while walking to the Bart via 2nd street in San Francisco on my way home. The massive depth of the 6 block excavation site and the parade of colorful cranes towering above the miles of struts compelled me to take a closer look. Fascinated and completely absorbed, I found myself involved in wanting to express the ever-changing scenes, characters and narratives of this industrial adventure. I began to make a photo journal from various locations along the perimeters of the site at different times of day.
Without hesitation, I decided on lithography and oil painting for this project because I feel I am most comfortable and freely expressive handling these art forms. In my lithographs for this series, I found drawing on limestone seemed well suited to express the raw gritty world of construction. I employed vivid and explosive gestures made with lithographic pencils, squares and touche to depict the rough and stony underground caverns of the construction site and vertical and horizontal thrusts of the iron and steel columns. When working in oil paint, I worked to create a visual vibration of brushwork, varied and interesting; such as translucent and mysterious shadows, thick opaque lights and dry brush to create texture, movement and energy. These painterly effects helped me to present depth and dimension to my work, such as the light bouncing from heavy machinery against the dark shadows of the surrounding buildings and iron columns, sparks flying from welding torches or streaks of light applied with a palette knife.
My process and concept involve the manipulation of darks or massing of negative space to emphasize the drama and narrative of the daily rigors of the construction workers against the powerful and intimidating maze of iron and steel. I envision these “negative” spaces as moving puzzle pieces or backdrops that create spectacular design elements as well as depth and atmospheric perspective. This spacial interaction is the catalyst that drives my passion for the industrial landscape; for I feel that it heightens my desire to capture the experience or process of the act of creation, not just the finish. Through this series I want to express the human element and the wonders of work that are deeply embedded through the evolutions of civilizations and the urban landscape.

Cat Van Bergen

A deep fascination with art history and the artistic interpretations caught in the transitions of time and space are inherent in Cat Van Bergen’s work. A background in theatre arts, Van Bergen tends to seek out figures, scenes and places that present the mood and character of living and working in diverse urban environments around the world. Van Bergen envisions the “urban theatre” as an ever changing backdrop and catalyst for creativity and exploration. She feels that there is a human element and connection down through history that is deeply embedded through the evolution of civilizations and the urban landscape that cannot be disguised or avoided. It is what Van Bergen feels gives a place it’s character and presence. VanBergen’s focus is painting and drawing; with a great appreciation for lithography. Attracted to strong composition, mood, design elements and spacial interaction, Van Bergen likes to experiment with the “quiet” moments or “negative space” in an artwork. She feels they provide powerful and engaging elements to experience the focus or contemplate an art form with deeper appreciation. Van Bergen received her BFA from The Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2014.
