Hsin-Yao Tseng Show 2014

Hsin-Yao Tseng: Nature • Urban • Beauty

There is a floral shop I often visit called Utsuwa Floral Design in San Francisco, transplanted from Tokyo, Japan. I was drawn to the gnarled majesty of a bonsai, or the fantasy landscape of air plant (terrarium). Since last summer I began cultivating air plants as a hobby. Also, since the beginning of last year I have been actively Plein Air painting with fellow artists around the Bay Area. This May we even took a trip to Yosemite National Park and enjoyed making outdoor paintings for the entire week. To explore and be surrounded by nature my senses awaken. I can really feel the wind blowing, the sunlight changing slowly, the endless skyline, the gigantic rocks…etc. Back in the city we are so small, living in this fast-moving society with all this advanced technology. I have to ask if we take enough time to break from this busy life, to slow down our path and really appreciate our surrounding environment?
There is a new element in my paintings. I paint fully realized cityscapes, brimming with activity, but with uneven borders of energetic black brushstrokes that flare off into white canvas. The effect borrows from Chinese brush and ink paintings while also stressing modernist ideals in experimentation, radical shifts in perspective and attention to the surface qualities of the canvas. I call it “Liu Bai” series. This is a new series where I combine both Chinese Philosophy and Western Philosophy through the use of relevant techniques. In the traditional Chinese painting, there is a skill called “Liu Bai” which means not to fill in all the spaces on a canvas. It is an art and the blank spaces will allow the general surface of a painting to be able to “breathe”.
My intent for this show is to bring nature to our home! There are some parallels to be found between the beauty of nature and the city. The light, the mood, the energy inspired by natural landscapes, reborn onto the canvas. Borrowing the same concept from Utsuwa Floral Design, there are many ways to transplant nature. Even if you live in a tiny space that has no room for plants, you can still hang a small glass air plant or grow succulent plants to green up your place.
