James Kroner: Artist Biography

James Kroner was born in San Francisco in 1978 and grew up in the suburbs of San Mateo. From a young age the visual world held much interest and fascination and he began to draw. By the time he was in high school, he had sketch‐books and would sit in a coffee shop and draw with a black ink pen, usually from imagination. A few friends got some of these drawings tattooed on their arms. He also became regular in keeping journals and writing thoughts and perceptions as a tool of self‐expression and this has come to serve for a large part of his process.

James started taking art classes at college of San Mateo in his early twenties and from this point knew he would pursue an education in art over the study of philosophy, which was also being debated at the time. Something clicked for him while drawing a series of gesture poses from a figure, and it was from this click, that happened again and again that opened his mind to the path he would take.

He began painting in 2005 at the Academy of Art. By the time he was in his later portion of undergraduate study, a strong shift in focus came over him and he was soon driven towards self-development as a painter, becoming a full time artist, receiving recognition at the Annual Spring Show, and receiving awards including first place for Landscape
Painting 2010, and a full scholarship for the Study Abroad Program in
Italy – Summer 2011. Painting had taken on a whole new purpose for him, art and life fused, and the drive to pursue his vision became a whole‐hearted passion. By the time he received his BFA he already knew he would go to graduate school. James never stopped writing, and even now continues to write and develop ideas for his thesis body of graduate work he’s currently working on. He has life experience to draw upon and a continual appreciation for the study of nature in its most beautiful and most unforgiving ways. He is continually drawn to the energy in nature, a force and a presence that inspires him to work.

James places a strong emphasis on composition, energy, mood, light and atmosphere, and always recognizes that for him, each work must begin with an emotion.
